Ben Margulies is a songwriter and record producer. Together, he and Mariah Carey lobbied record companies with their infamous 5 song demo tape with songs they had co-written and co-produced until Mariah got signed to Sony in 1988. Margulies had first met Carey when she was cutting demos of songs she had written with Gavin Christopher. A studio musician was needed for Carey's demo sessions, but was not available, so Margulies was called in to help out. The two of them kept in touch, and eventually got together to write songs, with the first of them being the unreleased "Here We Go Round Again".

While the songs Carey and Margulies had written were allowed to be used on Mariah's debut album, the self titled Mariah Carey, they were not allowed to produce songs for the most part on the album (Sony did let Carey and Margulies produce one song each). Once close friends, he and Carey had a falling out, and after her debut album, they never worked together again. Although the details of the dispute have never been fully elaborated on, it is believed that when Mariah Carey first started her career, she had signed a contract that gave Margulies half of her earnings instead of just the royalties he should rightfully earn as a songwriter. Carey tried to resolve the matter, but Margulies refused to compromise with Carey.

With a reputation founded on co-writing Carey's first three #1 hits (Vision of Love, Love Takes Time, Someday), Margulies continued a successful music career. In 2006, after [auditioning] for Margulies over a cell phone, Canadian singer [Lisa Lavie] began working with Margulies on her debut album.
