Bendigo Senior Secondary College is the single public senior (Years 11-12) secondary college in Bendigo, Victoria. Over 1800 students currently attend the school, making it one of the largest VCE providers in Victoria. The school uses a "young adults" approach to dealing with students, giving them a lot of freedom and a chance to prepare for graduation without being so reliant on a strict set of rules to follow. It teaches students from Bendigo and its surrounding Districts drawing students from the five government 7-10 colleges; Eaglehawk Secondary College, Flora Hill Secondary College, Golden Square Secondary College, Kangaroo Flat Secondary College and Weerona College Bendigo.

There are plans to use the former Bendigo Prison which is located next to the school grounds as classrooms in the near future. Work on redeveloping the goal expected to begin sometime in 2006/7, depending on approvial being granted.

History

The Bendigo Continuation School opened on April 27, 1907 with the aim of preparing students for entry into public service and teaching positions or University/Senior Technical School. At the time, the school had roughly 40 to 50 students. It incorporated nearby buildings such as the Sandhurst Corporate High School (later St Andrew's College) into it and eventually built the James King Hall & Administration block in 1930. The former Bendigo Supreme Court was used to serve as the music rooms when it was obtained in 1959, after the relocation of the Bendigo Girls' High School. Other additions include the Alexander Wing (1967) and the Commonwealth Library (1977)

1975 saw BSSC discontinue its services for years 7 to 10 and focused on years 11 to 12 and in 1976 it became Victoria's first Senior High School and in 1990 it became Bendigo Senior Secondary College.

In 1991 a building program was commenced which included the construction of a three storey building for the Science, Technology Studies and Arts and was in use by 1993. A Gymnasium, Cafeteria and Student Common Room were also included and in 1995 a plan to upgrade all of the existing buildings was put into action.
