Berbérati is the second largest city in the Central African Republic with a population of 59,414 (2003 census). It is the capital of the Mambéré-Kadéï Prefecture. The city is situated in the south-west of the country near the border with Cameroon. Berbérati was ceded by France to Germany under the terms of the 1911 Morocco-Congo Treaty, becoming part of the German colony of Neukamerun until it was reconquered by the French during WW1. It is home to an airport and a major hospital and is often visited by tourists to the Dzanga-Sangha Reserve.
