Berlin Marathon
Encyclopedia : B : BE : BER : Berlin Marathon
The Berlin Marathon is an annual marathon in Berlin, the capital of Germany. Usually it will take place in late September. The "33rd Berlin Marathon" will start on September 24, 2006 for the runners, and on September 23 for inline skaters, power walkers, handbikers, wheelchair riders, and for the children's marathon (4.2195 km, or one-tenth of a full marathon). The first Berlin Marathon took place in 1974.
The Berlin marathon follows a low-altitude course without any great elevations, which makes it a very fast race when the weather is right. Several world records were set at the Berlin Marathon:
- world record marathon women in 1999 (Tegla Loroupe, 2:20:43) and 2001 (Naoko Takahashi, 2:19:46),
- world record marathon men in 1998 (Ronaldo da Costa, 2:06:05) and the current world record in 2003 (Paul Tergat, 2:04:55).
