Encyclopedia : B : BE : BER : Bernardo Castello

Bernardo Castello or Castelli (born 1557 in Albaro near Genoa; died 1629) was a portrait and historical painter.

Castello learned under Alessandro Semini and Luca Cambiaso. He was a friend of Torquato Tasso, and took upon himself the task of designing the figures of the Gerusalemme Liberata. Some of these subjects were engraved by Agostino Caracci. Besides painting a number of works in Genoa, mostly in a rapid and superficial style, Castello was employed in Rome and in the court of the duke of Savoy.

He was the father of Valerio Castello.
