Bernkastel-Kues is a town over 700 years old, located at the Middle Mosel in the district Bernkastel-Wittlich, in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The population in 2005, including the two neighbouring districts of Wehlen and Andel, was about 8000. Close to the town on a hill lies the ancient castle of Landshut, built in 1277. Due to an accidental fire the building burnt down on January 8, 1692 and is thus now in ruins. It is a popular viewpoint and gives a beautiful view over the vineyards of the Mosel valley.
Bernkastel-Kues is very famous for its wines and the old market square. The square is surrounded by many well preserved half-timbered houses. In the first week of September there is always a big wine festival with a display of fireworks and a festive procession. The famous Christmas-Markt (Christmas Market) is especially nice. Many local vendors sell everything from hotwine, called Glühwein, to handmade trinkets. The main industries in Bernkastel-Kues are viticulture and tourism.
The beautiful town is the twin town of Milton Keynes, a new town in Buckinghamshire, England.
It is the birthplace of the great philosopher, Cardinal Nicholas of Cusa (Nicolaus von Kues) 1401-1464). His heart is buried in the Gothic chapel of the nursing home St. Nicholas, which was founded by Nicholas of Cusa and granted a generous endowment by him. The buildings of the hospital were erected between 1451 and 1458. It is famous for its library, which holds more than 300 precious scripts dating from the 9th to 15th century.
