Encyclopedia : B : BE : BER : Berwyn (CTA)
Berwyn is a station on the Chicago Transit Authority's Red Line, part of the Chicago 'L' metro system. It is located at 1121 W. Berwyn Avenue in Chicago, Illinois (directional coordinates 5300 north, 1200 west). It is in the southern part of the Edgewater neighborhood.
The station opened as Edgewater Beach Station in 1918, but was rebuilt to by architect Charles P. Rawson when the Northwestern Elevated Railroad Company raised the tracks between Wilson and Howard onto an embankment in 1921. The name was changed to Berwyn in the late 1950s. Four tracks pass through the station, but there is only single island platform in the center of the tracks; Purple Line express services use the outside tracks but do not stop.
