Encyclopedia : B : BE : BET : Beta Chi Theta

Beta Chi Theta National Fraternity, Inc. (ΒΧΘ) is a nationally recognized social fraternity that was established in 1999 at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). On June 2, 1999, Beta Chi Theta was formally acknowledged by the university and granted membership into the UCLA Inter-Fraternity Council (IFC). Beta Chi Theta was originally founded by 8 students and today has over 300 brothers in California, Oklahoma, Texas, Indiana, Florida, and Tennessee. The founding principles which support and give purpose to Beta Chi Theta are: creating and maintaining a strong, close-knit Brotherhood, honoring Tradition, actively pursuing Service to Humanity, increasing South Asian Awareness, promoting Academic Excellence, and building a unified Nationwide Network.

Creed

"We, the brothers of Beta Chi Theta, in order to form a national fraternity based on leadership, cultural consciousness, and most importantly brotherhood, believe in the advancement of one’s self by way of community service, academic preeminence, and perpetual kinship."

Heraldry

The colors of Beta Chi Theta are Black, Silver, and White.

Philanthropy

Although classified as a social fraternity, a founding principle of Beta Chi Theta is Service to Humanity. Many local chapters host "service weeks" in an effort to focus their energies to a particular problem. For example, at the University of Texas, the Eta Chapter hosts a week in the Spring of every year known as BHD Week (Beating Heart Disease Week). During this week they provide extensive awareness and fundraising to the causes, effects, and cures of heart disease.

Alumni

Because the bonds of brotherhood last a lifetime, Beta Chi Theta believes strongly in a unified nationwide network of alumni. Beta Chi Theta alumni believe in helping their fellow brothers by providing guidance and counseling about issues such as the current job market and applying to graduate and professional schools.

Motto

"Above all else, Brotherhood"

North-American Interfraternity Conference

On April 23rd, 2006, Beta Chi Theta became the first and only nationally recognized South Asian fraternity through its acceptance of membership into the North-American Interfraternity Conference (NIC). Additionally, at seven years of age, it is also the youngest fraternity ever to become a member of the NIC.

Beta Chi Theta, along with Alpha Phi Alpha, Phi Sigma Kappa, and Sigma Phi Delta, was welcomed into the NIC by NIC President James R. Estes at the opening ceremonies of the NIC Annual Meeting. In his welcome, Estes commented that these fraternities “bring a rich tradition of fraternity ideals to the conference. We are thrilled that they have joined the conference and look forward to working with them in the coming years.” “We look forward to including these organizations in our educational programming, campus visits, and community events,” said NIC Executive Vice President Jon Williamson.

All chapters and colonies of the fraternity are either members of their host institution's Inter-Fraternity Council (IFC) or are currently pursuing membership.
