beyerdynamic (spelled with a lower-case b) is a German audio equipment manufacturer. Since the start in 1924 beyerdynamic has remained a German family-owned company. beyerdynamic now produces microphones, headphones, wireless audio systems and conference systems.

In 1937 production of the world's first dynamic headphone (the DT 48) began.

In 1948 the company moved from Berlin to Heilbronn. In 1960 it moved into larger buildings in Heilbronn, which today house their 260 employees.

In 1998 beyerdynamic presented the first wireless conference system. The company has continued to develop this technology and now offers different systems used in banks, congress centers and council chambers world-wide.

Products

Headphones from beyerdynamic are popular choices in studios, among which are the closed DT 770, the semi-open DT 880, and the open DT 990 which occupy the top spots in the Premiumline series. The DT 770 offers deep bass, while the well-reviewed DT 880 has been shown to have a more articulate and "analytical" sound ideally suited for relatively uncolored sound production. The DT 990, which has been promoted to the top of the beyerdynamic line, has a somewhat richer sound that's easier to enjoy for long periods of time. In most situations, these and most other reference class headphones require the use of a headphone amplifier to unlock their full potential.

The company has begun to offer these Premiumline models in customizable designs direct from the factory (http://www.beyerdynamic.com/cms/MANUFACTURE.manufaktur.0.html?&L=1#), giving the customer the unprecedented ability to choose between impedance, colors, earpads, and even personalization. These models are still offered in their factory designs, at a lower price. No discernable difference in sound quailty has been noted between customized and factory headphones. This is the first time any headphone company has offered consumers the ability to "create" their headphones online.

For professional broadcast applications, the closed DT 100 (available in a variety of impedances and featuring the cable eminating from the right driver - an important feature for camera operators) became a somewhat industry standard, being widely seen in recording studios and broadcast facilities across the world. One reason for its popularity is due to a modular design, meaning that any part of the headphone can be replaced 'in the field' without the need for specialised tools. Beyerdynamic have since produced the DT 150, an upgraded version featuring a wider frequency response but only being available as a 250 ohm model.
