Bias-ply tire

Encyclopedia : B : BI : BIA : Bias-ply tire

Bias-ply tires (also called cross ply tires) are a common design for tires used on vehicles such as automobiles and trucks.

Conventional tires are made with layers, called plies, of rubberised textile cords where each layer crosses the other diagonally. When the cross ply tire is inflated in the mould the cords would stretch to a low angle in the crown to give rigidity in the tread regeon, while the higher angle in the sidewall gave more flexibility.

Another common design, the radial tire has cords crossing at 90 degrees for maximum stability. The green (uncured) carcass was then inflated and the belts and tread applied.
