Big Hole

The Big Hole is a huge open-pit mine in Kimberley, South Africa. It is the biggest hole ever made by man and it resembles a meteorite crater. From 1866 to 1914 no less than 50,000 diggers have been digging for diamonds. The Big Hole has a surface of 17 hectares and is 463 metres wide and 1097 metres deep; groundwater filled the hole to a depth of 175 metres below the "surface".
