Encyclopedia : B : BI : BIL : Bild Lilli doll
The Bild Lilli Doll was a 11 1/2 inch German fashion doll whom Barbie was based on. She was started in 1955. She was based on a German cartoon character who was an ambitious hooker. The Lilli doll was originally marketed to adult men in bars and tobacco shops, but she eventually became popular with children, who dressed her up in outfits that were sold seperately. The doll became so popular that she was exported to other countries, including the United States.
Mattel aquired the rights to the Lill doll and re-named her Barbie, who debuted in 1959.
