Bill Haverchuck is a fictional character who is the best friend of Sam Weir on the NBC dramedy Freaks and Geeks (1999-2000).
With his thick-lensed glasses and physical awkwardness, Bill is the stereotypical geek. He is naive and often follows his closest friends Sam Weir and Neal Schweiber into awkward and embarrassing situations. His naiveté and easygoing nature provides comic relief and balances the more dramatic aspects of the series.
Bill is the only son of single mother Gloria Haverchuck. Bill rarely sees his father. (Bill's father never appeared on the show.) Bill is close to his mother. Their relationship is strained when she begins dating Coach Fredricks, Bill's physical education teacher.
Bill has a crush on Maureen Sampson--the beautiful new girl at school who, surprisingly, befriends the geeks. He got a sympathy kiss from Vicky Applebee (played by Joanna Garcia), a popular cheerleader, after winning "seven minutes in heaven" in a round of spin the bottle.
Bill is obsessed with the Bionic Woman, whom he dressed up as for Halloween. Bill enjoys the TV show Dallas and is loath to miss an episode; he becomes concerned if he feels that JR Ewing is about to walk into a trap.
Bill is seriously allergic to peanuts. In one episode he nearly dies after ingesting a peanut placed in his sandwich by bully Alan White.
Bill Haverchuck is played by actor Martin Starr.
