Birdie (Street Fighter)
Encyclopedia : B : BI : BIR : Birdie (Street Fighter)
Birdie is a video game character from Capcom's Street Fighter series of fighting games.
Story
Before his criminal career, Birdie was a professional wrestler, teaming with occasional rival Titanic Tim (from the Saturday Night Slam Masters series) as the "500 Million Trillion Powers." When his wrestling career ended, he turned to a life of crime, but became a street fighter to gain money on the side. His notoriety got him invited to the first World Warrior tournament. When it came time to fight, Birdie was suffering from a particularly nasty strain of flu, and lost his fight with Ryu (see trivia).
Despite this setback, Birdie rose up the ladder of criminal success, and he eventually became aware of an organization called Shadoloo. He managed to use his criminal notoriety to join them.
He snuck into a Shadoloo data room and discovered something, not knowing that M. Bison (ruler of the organization) was watching him. What he discovered was the Psycho Drive machine. He decided to find this machine, and use it to overthrow Bison and become lord of Shadoloo himself. Bison sent Balrog to kill Birdie, but Birdie told him about the Psycho Drive and that they could use to it become powerful. Unfortunately, hindered by Balrog's incompetence, Birdie couldn't find the Drive before it blew up.
Birdie likely remained with Shadoloo until it finally collapsed, and is either back on the street or in jail by now.
Appearance
Birdie is a hulking figure with dyed blonde hair, a leather jacket, several rings, and oddly pointed shoes. His unusual looking shoes are more common to punks in Japan, rather than Birdie's native England. He also has a tattoo of a red heart on the side of his head.Trivia
- In the original Street Fighter, Birdie was a Caucasian male. In later games, he was retconned as being black and stood in a hunched pose. This discrepancy is (comically) explained in one of his win quotes in Street Fighter Alpha 3. He states that he used to be pale because he was sick.
- In the Street Fighter Alpha series, Birdie was supposed to threaten his opponents with the Japanese taunt shi ne meaning "die" or "go to hell." Because "hell" was considered too strong a word, the final translation ended up being "go to heaven." Therefore, when Birdie executes his some of his moves, he is uncharacteristally well-mannered in his threats.
- In the Udon Street Fighter comic, Birdie makes reference to "Running the Raging Storm gang out of the city", which is a subtle jab at rival company SNK.
- In the Udon Street Fighter comic, the other members of his entourage have tattoos consisting of a spade, a diamond, and club, completing a "deck of cards" theme.
- In his Street Fighter Alpha ending, Birdie's cattle skull beltbuckle is replaced with a Shadoloo symbol.
