Encyclopedia : B : BI : BIS : Bischofsheim (Mainspitze)

Bischofsheim (Mainspitze) is a town of 13,000 residents in Hesse, Germany on the left (south) bank of the Main river, not far from the confluence with the Rhine. A rail junction (crossing of the line from Mainz to Frankfurt with the line from Wiesbaden to Darmstadt) and Autobahn junction (A60 and A671) supplement the river transportation possibilities.

In the Middle Ages, it was ruled by the Archbishop of Mainz, but fell to Hesse-Darmstadt in 1579. In 1930 it was annexed to the city of Mainz but regained its independence in 1945 under American occupation.
