Black+White

Encyclopedia : B : BL : BLA : Black+White

Black+White is a bimonthly Australian magazine published by Studio Magazines that debuted in the summer of 1992. For a period it was also known as (Not Only) Black+White magazine.

Black+White showcases art, photography and graphic design as well as interviews with celebrities and features on popular culture and current events. It has featured work by Herb Ritts, Annie Leibovitz and David LaChapelle amongst many others.

The magazine, however, has gained most of its notoriety for publishing nude photographs of (mainly Australian) celebrities within its pages, most particularly those of Australian athletes set to compete in the Olympic Games. Although the images are shot in an artistic manner and are not meant for titillation, they have still drawn controversy from conservative groups in Australia, and with some figures, overseas.

The Australian men's water polo and women's softball teams for the Sydney 2000 Summer Olympic Games also appeared in a special issue dedicated to the Games.
