Black Oak is a town in Craighead County, Arkansas, USA. The population was 286 at the 2000 census. It is the setting of John Grisham's novel A Painted House.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.2 km² (0.4 mi²), all land.

Demographics

As of the census[Geographic references#2GR2] of 2000, there were 286 people, 120 households, and 81 families residing in the town. The population density was 245.4/km² (641.3/mi²). There were 132 housing units at an average density of 113.3/km² (296.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 97.55% White, 0.35% Black or African American, 0.70% Native American, 0.70% Asian, 0.70% from other races. 0.70% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 120 households out of which 24.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.2% were married couples living together, 5.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.7% were non-families. 28.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 18.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.

Black Oak is the hometown of the founding members of the 1970s Southern rock band, Black Oak Arkansas.
