Blaine Ray

Encyclopedia : B : BL : BLA : Blaine Ray

Blaine Ray is the founder of a second-language acquisition method called Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling (TPRS). Although his technique has roots in James Asher's TPR (Total Physical Response), it has separated from it by moving towards an emphasis on storytelling and reading over the physical movement of traditional TPR. TPRS centers on the research of Dr. Stephen Krashen that supports comprehensible input as the major factor in boosting second-language fluency. Students acquire the new language through hearing target grammatical structures repeatedly in the context of a story and then seeing the same structures repeated in readings. The target structures are circled with questions, giving each step of the story multiple repetitions thereby aiding the students to internalize these structures much faster and more permanently than traditional grammar-based methods.
