Bluegrass Community and Technical College, formerly two separate institutions known as Lexington Community College and Central Kentucky Technical College, is a community college located next to the University of Kentucky campus, in the shadow of Commonwealth Stadium. Presently,it is a member of the Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS). Until 2004, it was considered a part of the University of Kentucky's Community College System, until a vote by the trustees transferred governance to KCTCS. BCTC educates over 13,000 students spread across 5 campuses.
BCTC's main campus in Lexington consists of three buildings. The Oswald Building is the main building, consisting of classrooms, administrative offices, as well as a cafeteria and a bookstore. The Academic Technical building is mostly classrooms, and the Moloney Building contains more classrooms as well as several computer labs. The other campuses are located in Harrodsburg, Winchester, Danville, and Lawrenceburg.
BCTC students are still very connected to UK, depending upon it for parking passes, ID cards, as well as having access to residence halls and student tickets for athletic events. BCTC offers two-and-four year programs, with many students opting for the two-year route to work their way back toward a four-year university such as UK or another. Many students attend BCTC for the purpose of transferring to the University of Kentucky and only take classes at BCTC that will transfer to the University and never earn a degree at BCTC. Interestingly, BCTC has a large international student base with students attending from Europe, Jordan, Turkey and many other nations.
