A blunt is a type of inexpensive cigar which is usually machine rolled, such as Swisher Sweets, Garcia y Vega, Phillie Blunts, Peach Optimos, Kingpin, White Owls, or Dutch Masters. These cigars typically consist of two main parts; the inner leaf is similar to a cigarette rolling paper, except it is made of tobacco, and the thicker outer leaf which is rolled around the inner leaf in a spiral. In North America, the UK, and most of Europe, the term blunt sometimes refers to a cigar that has been taken apart and re-rolled with marijuana. For those marijuana or herbal blunt smokers, the nicotine buzz from the tobacco leaf in addition to the legal smoking herbs (Damiana, Salvia Divinorum, Wild Lettuce, etc..) or marijuana, makes for a more intense "high". In its non-drug context, blunt by itself refers to a particular size of cigar, produced by many different companies.

Recently, a host of Blunt-style rolling papers have appeared on the market. Brands include: Blunt Wrap, Kingpin, E-Z Roll Tube, Cyclones, Tobacones, Juicy, & Brown Sugar. These are essentially pre-made, 100% cigar rolling papers. All that is needed is to spread tobacco or marijuana evenly throughout the blunt paper, roll it up and seal it. Most are sealed individually to keep them fresh, moist and flexible, as dry cigar leaves are prone to cracking and breaking. Some brands also include a plastic tube, around which the blunt paper is rolled during manufacturing, and a transparent, plastic sheet wrapped around the blunt paper to give an extra layer of protection. This tube can be used to pack the marijuana down in the burning end once it has been rolled up. The Kingpin and Cyclone Blunts come in a plastic tube-case. This is an added benefit because you can insert your rolled-blunt into the tube and re-seal it for storage later.

Some discerning users of marijuana prefer regular cigars, as pre-made blunt "wraps" have a much more processed, flimsy feel to them.

Note that the blunt wrappers mentioned above are often used to roll tobacco-only blunts because it's cheaper to roll your own cigar then purchase a pre made one due to tobacco taxes. In addition you can customize the size, shape and type of filler that you use when you roll your own cigar (see roll your own).

An even more recent innovation is the pre-rolled cone blunt (Cyclones). This is a blunt that is rolled into a cone shape and sold in a tube. All the user needs to do is break up the Tobacco and place it in the cone.

Characteristics when using Marijuana

Blunts are generally larger, longer and slower burning than marijuana cigarettes, which are rolled with normal rolling paper. This makes them particularly appealing for large groups of smokers. Blunts are also more common in the younger smoking groups and in heavily populated areas, as it's easy to obtain a single cigar almost anywhere, and there is nothing leftover once it has been smoked. Some marijuana smokers rarely use blunts because they claim it is too harsh, tastes bad, or they simply do not like the idea of mixing their marijuana with tobacco. They may also have access to bongs or pipes and prefer them, as these apparatus are seen as less wasteful than the constantly burning blunt.

Rolling a Blunt

There are three popular methods for rolling a blunt. In leafing, the outer leaf of the cigar is moistened and removed whole. The inner leaf is then folded, filled with tobacco or herbs, and wrapped in the outer leaf, which must remain moist. Leafing creates a tightly-rolled and durable blunt, providing an even burn.

Another technique, known as "spliffing," involves splitting a cigar lengthways with a razor or a fingernail. The tobacco is then removed ("spilling the guts" or "gutting" as it is sometimes called), replaced with marijuana or herbs, and resealed (some prefer only removing a certain amount of the tobacco, mixing the marijuana with the tobacco and resealing. This technique is commonly used in an effort to use less marijuana or to get a tobacco buzz). The outer leaf on some machine-made cigars, such as Phillies, is very hard to remove, making leafing hard for these blunts. Therefore, spliffing is the preferred way to roll these blunts.

Another technique used to roll blunts involves using blunt wrappers. These are the leaves of a cigar sold independently in the shape of large rolling papers either as pre-rolled cones or folded sheets. With pre-rolled cone blunt wraps you simply fill the empty cone-shaped blunt with marijuana, or a mixture of marijuana and tobacco, and seal the ends. The sheets are rolled in much the same way as a regular "spliffed" blunt, although there is no tobacco to remove, as it arrives unrolled.

Often, when rolling a joint or a blunt a "roach" or "crutch" will be added to keep the herbs inside the blunt, and provide a more solid mouthpiece. Most often, crutches are made from a small, torn piece of cardboard, which is rolled into a tight spiral and inserted in the smoking end of the blunt. Using a crutch can prevent herbs from being wasted, as it allows the blunt to burn to the end without becoming too hot to hold. In Europe and sometimes in the United States, people tend to break off a piece of cigarette (known as a "Chip" in the UK, "filter" in Canada, or "Spliff" in the US) and place this in the smoking end, thus allowing all the marijuana in the blunt to be smoked. The remains of a smoked blunt are also called a "roach", and smokers often save the brown buds left in them after smoking; many hold that the herbs from a roach contain large amounts of THC, although the truth of this may be disputed. While all the THC-laden smoke from the start of the blunt must pass through the "roach" buds, its heat may destroy most of the THC present, leaving only sticky, THC-less resin in the buds.

Colloquialisms

A "whomp" is two split Phillie blunts, stuck together to make a double wide wrap, often mixing flavors for a unique taste(Strawberry/Banana for example), producing a blunt that is twice as "fat" as a normal blunt, smoking much stronger and longer. This term originates from West Texas.

An "oo-wop" refers to two blunts rolled together, creating a blunt twice as long. The name originated in New York City.

A New Yorker or wu-banger is a blunt mixed with cocaine. This combination can also be known as "primo" or "a Magic Stick". In Northern California, it is known as a "chewy", and in the South as a "dirty" or "Dirt McGirt" (a reference to Ol Dirty Bastard).

A royale blunt (like a royal spliff) is a blunt which has hashish mixed in with the marijuana.

A marijuana blunt mixed with cocaine and opium is known as a woolah.

A blunt connected at both ends to form an extra long blunt is known as a "baseball bat" or a "souvenier bat". Such blunts are often saved for special occasions and/or events. The amount of marijuana needed for a "baseball or souvenier bat" can often be quite expensive and requires several people to "throw in" on it.

A Gotti is a blunt which is prepared by carefully removing the contents of a regular tobacco cigar, allowing it to retain its former shape, and filling the tube with marijuana. Other terms for this process include "stuffing a blunt" or "freaking a blunt," to do this you use a small stick to work the tobacco out of the cigar, then repack it full with weed. It's also possible to roll the tobacco out of the cigar (as if you were making a snake with Play-Doh) and then fill it with weed. A "gotti" is also a fat blunt, or "fatty"

"Blunt" is also a term sometimes used in the UK to denote any marijuana cigarette which is comprised of purely marijuana and no tobacco, as opposed to a spliff, the more common UK method of smoking, which is a mix of marijuana and tobacco.
