History

There are several competing theories regarding the origin of the name.

One possibility is that it is a derivative of the English name Bowmaker, which is most associated with the Middle Ages when the Longbow was an important weapon. Similar names such as Boaker and Bowker seem to support this theory [link].

An apparently unrelated possibility suggests that Boakes is a derivative of Old English word Balca which means "bank/ridge dweller" [link].
