Bob le Flambeur (translated as Bob the High Roller) is a 1955 French gangster film directed by Jean-Pierre Melville. The film stars Roger Duchesne as Bob. The black-and-white film noir was remade by Neil Jordan as The Good Thief (2002). The film is considered a precursor to the French New Wave movement.
Story
Bob, a middle-aged gambler and thief, plans a complicated heist. He deals with a number of underworld characters while planning the robbery of the Deauville Casino. Bob eventually hires a gang that includes an ace safecracker. Unfortunately for them, Bob's nemesis, an old cop who Bob once saved from death, is tipped off after a money-hungry croupier's wife betrays them. The police are waiting when the gang begins the seemingly impossible task of robbing the casino vault. Meanwhile in the casino, Bob starts to gamble.Critical reaction
The film received positive reviews when re-released by Rialto Pictures in US cinemas in 2001, earning a 100% "Cream Of The Crop" Tomatometer reading on Rotten Tomatoes.[link]Critic Roger Ebert notes in his "Great Movies" review, "Jean-Pierre Melville's 'Bob le Flambeur' (1955) has a good claim to be the first film of the French New Wave."
