History and Mission
The "Luigi Bocconi" University was established in 1902 with a generous endowment from Ferdinando Bocconi, a wealthy merchant who thereby meant to commemorate his son disappeared in battle overseas. Bocconi thus became the first Italian institution of higher education to grant a degree in economics.Since its inception, Bocconi has stood for liberalism, pluralism, and social and economic progress. While being a private institution, Bocconi has never meant to be an elite university. To the contrary, in order to achieve excellence, Bocconi has consistently promoted and practiced equality of opportunity among its many generations of students, by actively subsidizing the education of disadvantaged students. In the words of its first Rector and President, Leopoldo Sabbatini, a strenuosly democratic lawyer, Bocconi´s motto is to "promote harmony between school and life." In keeping with the ideals of its founders, Bocconi University seeks to address the research and education needs of the national, European, and global economic system, by assiduously favouring cultural progress, international exchange, and economic integration.
Therefore, the University promotes both economic advancement and civic values, by providing students with solid intellectual and professional training, so that they can contribute to the innovation and development of Italian and European businesses. Accordingly, Bocconi is committed to nurture both an analytical and an ethical mindset in its graduates. Bocconi views culture and science as the cornerstones for the moral and economic renewal of Italy.
Bocconi is a research university of international standing. By means of basic and applied research funded by national and supranational organizations, Bocconi makes its contribution to the progress of business and economic science. By partaking in a European and global network of international centres of economic knowledge, Bocconi exchanges faculty and cooperates on large projects with several like-minded European and American universities and business schools. By cultivating close relations with firms, agencies, and their management and officials, Bocconi costantly interacts with the business and economic environment to assess new issues, implement new techniques, and start new research endeavours.
Bocconi University conceives education as an ongoing process which does not end with graduation, but spans the entire professional life of an individual.
