The Bocconi University (Italian Università Commerciale Luigi Bocconi, UNI-BOCCONI) is a university located in Milan, Italy. It was founded in 1902.

History and Mission

The "Luigi Bocconi" University was established in 1902 with a generous endowment from Ferdinando Bocconi, a wealthy merchant who thereby meant to commemorate his son disappeared in battle overseas. Bocconi thus became the first Italian institution of higher education to grant a degree in economics.

Since its inception, Bocconi has stood for liberalism, pluralism, and social and economic progress. While being a private institution, Bocconi has never meant to be an elite university. To the contrary, in order to achieve excellence, Bocconi has consistently promoted and practiced equality of opportunity among its many generations of students, by actively subsidizing the education of disadvantaged students. In the words of its first Rector and President, Leopoldo Sabbatini, a strenuosly democratic lawyer, Bocconi´s motto is to "promote harmony between school and life." In keeping with the ideals of its founders, Bocconi University seeks to address the research and education needs of the national, European, and global economic system, by assiduously favouring cultural progress, international exchange, and economic integration.
