History

Bombardier Transportation was founded in 1974 and started manufacturing rolling stock with a contract from the Société de transport de la Communauté urbaine de Montréal to build metro trains for the Montréal Métro.

The core of the Transportation group was formed with the purchase of Montreal Locomotive Works (MLW) in 1975. The group also purchased Hawker Siddeley Canada. MLW was later sold to General Electric in 1988.

Bombardier produced the LRC (Light, Rapid, Comfortable) tilting train in the 1980s.

With its acquisition of the German company Adtranz from DaimlerChrysler in 2001, Bombardier Transportation became by many measurements the world’s largest rail equipment manufacturer. The addition of Adtranz also made Bombardier a manufacturer of locomotives along with its existing product lines of passenger carriages, multiple-unit trains, and trams.

Products

Bombardier also supplies propulsion units, train-control systems, bogies, and other parts, and maintains train fleets.

Criticism

Bombardier has faced international criticism from some pro-Tibetan independence organizations for its involvement in the Qingzang railway project.http://www.bombardieroutoftibet.orghttp://actionnetwork.org/sft/alert-description.tcl?alert_id=3492803 http://www.tibet.ca/en/wtnarchive/2005/6/18_3.html
