Book design
Encyclopedia : B : BO : BOO : Book design
Book design is the art of incorporating the content, style, format, design, and sequence of the various components of a book into a coherent whole.
In the words of Jan Tschichold, book design "[...] though largely forgotten today, methods and rules upon which it is impossible to improve have been developed over centuries. To produce perfect books these rules have to be brought back to life and applied."[#endnote_form]
The basic unit in book design is the page spread. The left page (called verso) and right page (called recto) are of the same size and aspect ratio, and are centered on the gutter where they are bound together at the spine.
Book design concerns itself with the following elements:
- Overall layout, type choices
- Front and back covers
- Title page
- Edition notice
- Table of contents
- List of figures
- List of Tables
- Preface
- Body chapters
- Appendices
- Glossary
- Index
