Booker T. Washington High School is a secondary school located at 1200 NW 6th Avenue in Miami, Florida. Booker T. serves the downtown Miami area; its principal is Rosann P. Sidener.
Construction for Booker T. Washington began in 1985 and the school opened its doors as an overcrowding reliever facility for Miami Edison High School the following year. Booker T. has become one of the worst performing schools in the district with nearly 90% of its population in recent years receiving failing grades on the FCAT state examination. This has forced the district to administer tougher school policies, including the shortening of boundaries to lower school population and average class size. The district has also boosted funding for educational purposes against FCAT policy that schools receiving a lower grade also receive lower funding. Due to its location as an inner city high school, the school has also suffered from higher crime and vandalism rates though this has gone down due to higher emphasis on school security beginning in the early 2000s.
The school contains a unique feature amongst other high schools in the district as it holds a miniature planetarium on its ground floor that is opened to students and the public. The planetarium was built as part of an ongoing renovation program for Miami-Dade Schools. During this renovation, the school also received a new building and a complete overhaul of its old facilities. Currently, Booker T. has the lowest school population of any high school in the district.
