Borden-Carleton, Prince Edward Island

Encyclopedia : B : BO : BOR : Borden-Carleton, Prince Edward Island

Borden-Carleton is a small Canadian town located on the south shore of Prince Edward Island.

Created through a merger in the early 1990s of the original communities of Borden (Port Borden) and Carleton, Borden-Carleton traces its history to Prince Edward Island's requirements for transportation to mainland North America, first with iceboats, then with the 1917 arrival of the Prince Edward Island Railway and a dedicated ferry service, operated by Canadian Government Railways, then by Canadian National Railways, followed by CN Marine and Marine Atlantic until the opening of the Confederation Bridge in 1997, which has its island terminus at Borden-Carleton, eliminated the need for a ferry service.
