Boredoms

Boredoms (ボアダムス) are an avant-garde band from Osaka, Japan formed in 1986. Their wildly varied output is notoriously difficult to pigeonhole, but is usually referred to as noise rock, particularly as part of the "Japanoise" scene of artists. Like some of Naked City's music, Boredoms tend to offer sudden and drastic shifts in tempo, genre and mood, though their more recent records have been largely based on repetition.
Critic David Sprague describes the Boredoms as resembling "a head-on collision between ... free-form Sun Ra's Arkestra and the scatological nihilism of early Butthole Surfers — fronted by the hollers and gibbers of a couple of guys who can't decide whether they'd rather be Beastie Boys or Residents. But even that doesn't really describe the sheer sense of otherness that pervades the Boredoms aesthetic."[#endnote_TrouserPress]
They have had a fair amount of success in Japan, but only fleeting popularity in the United States. The group gained exposure in the west after opening for Sonic Youth in 1992, and also for Nirvana for eight consecutive shows in late October and early November of 1993. The following year, they performed on the main stage of the 1994 Lollapalooza tour.
Boredoms have a vast and sometimes confusing discography. Many band members have rotated through the group over the years, often using a number of various stage names. Singer Yamatsuka Eye is the closest they have to a front man; his output includes a range of baffling screams, babbling, electronic effects and very heavy post-production. Drummer/singer/trumpeter Yoshimi P-We has been featured on many Boredoms recordings as well.
Two members, Yamatsuka Eye and Yamamoto Seiichi, formed a collaboration with Yamazaki Maso of Masonna calling themselves "Triple Yama's."
Current activities
Boredoms have been relatively quiet since the release of Vision Creation Newsun, with members pursuing other projects. Eye oversaw a series of remixes of the Boredoms catologue by guest DJs, contributing one album himself. In late 2004 the Boredoms released their first album as a group in 4 years, Seadrum/House of Sun, which consists of just two extended tracks, both clocking at around 20 minutes. Along with changing the groups name to V∞redoms, the group's format has changed considerably stripping down to a four person ensemble, with Eye and Yoshimi remaining from the early days of the lineup, and several newer members. The groups music revolves heavily around the multiple drummers.Yamatsuka Eye has changed his name three times, from Yamataka Eye, to Yamantaka Eye, to Yamatsuka Eye. Prior to starting Boredoms, he founded the noise punk band Hanatarash (which roughly translates into "snot-nose") in the 1980s. While there are rumors about wild Boredoms shows, the majority of them are actually true about Hanatarash performances, in which the group often caused thousands of dollars of damage. It is supposedly true that Eye once drove a bulldozer through the wall of a club, dissected a dead alley cat on stage, and threw lit dynamite.
