Box Office Mojo

Encyclopedia : B : BO : BOX : Box Office Mojo

Box Office Mojo is the leading website that tracks domestic (United States and Canada) and international box office revenue in a systematic way. It has become the statistical "journal of record" for most of the film industry press. Brandon Gray started the site in August 1998 and claims to now receive over one million monthly visitors. The forums are a popular place for box office "fanatics" and is home to several popular games (Fantasy Box Office and Create your movie). Tracking is done very close to the day by day, actual tabulation by the distributors. It is possible to see the general trend of a film's "earnings trajectory". Many stories in the general press are centerd on the Boxoffice data tabulated on this site.

The history of the forums on BOM

In the summer of 2002, BOM introduced its forums. While they started out small, by the summer 2003, the boards were the biggest BO forums on the internet. However, things changed.

On October 2004, there was an exodus from the forums of boxofficemojo(known as BOM to its members). A group of trio known as baba, loyal, and eagle worked together to create their own box-office site called worldofkj.com(known as KJ to its members). Many of the posters left BOM and went on to KJ. Their reasons was their anger at BOM for not properly having any mods to regulate the forums, and for the forums rules, which were thought to be just generally annoying and stupid to most. After the October exodus, the boards of BOM were very slow.

However, a new generation of posters came and along with some of the old posters still there, BOM became alive again. Some of the posters about of this revivial were Impact, Magnus101(known as simply Magnus now), Prime_032(known as Prime! now), and Mannyisthebest. These four posters along with others brought the fun back to BOM, and the forums were once again the most active BO forums on the net. And they all like to eat their own crap.

But things started to become worse again a year later. The boards started to become chaotic by November 2005, and many were upset again. The cause for this Some started to leave to KJ while others just stopped posting. Then, a poster known as Superman128 infected the boards with idiotic rants about the film, Superman Returns. His rants turn the boards into full chaos. People were upset, but they did not want to go to KJ as they didn't feel comfortable over there. So a poster named rptuman(later to be known simply as Ross) created a new site called boxofficefanatic.com(known as BOF to its users) By early July, the forums of the site were running and many from BOM joined it. BOM is still lingering on, but with KJ and BOF rising, the forums of the site are almost dead.

Scott Holleran writes the majority of movie reviews on Box Office Mojo. Some of his recent reviews, such as his review of [[The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe]], angered the site's visitors. [link]
