Boxing at the 1992 Summer Olympics

Encyclopedia : B : BO : BOX : Boxing at the 1992 Summer Olympics

Boxing at the 1992 Summer Olympics took place in the old Pavelló Club Joventut de Badalona in Barcelona. The boxing schedule began on July 26 and ended on August 9. Twelve boxing events (all men's individual) were contested, with the participation of 441 athletes and 159 officials from 106 countries.

In order to limit the number of boxers in the Barcelona boxing competition, the International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA) set a maximum per continent, with the exception of America, which was considered to constitute two different groups. The participants had to be between 17 and 32 and to present their competition record with basic medical certificates and a confirmation that they had had their annual check-up. With this reduction in numbers (108 fewer than in Seoul), the AIBA aimed to raise the quality of the boxing competition at the Barcelona Games. The introduction of computerised scoring, replacing the traditional cards, was one of the novelties after Seoul. At the Barcelona Games, the judges used an electronic system to send the score to a computer while the fight was going on, so that it was impossible for them to change them.
