Brad Stuart (born November 6, 1979 in Rocky Mountain House, Alberta) is a professional ice hockey player.
Playing career
Stuart was drafted in the 1st round, 3rd overall, in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft by the San Jose Sharks. On 30 November, 2005 he was traded along with Marco Sturm and Wayne Primeau from the San Jose Sharks to the Boston Bruins for Joe Thornton. He was playing for the Bruins as of the end of the 2005-06 season.
A dominant offensive defenseman, Stuart suffered a huge blow when he received a concussion from Jody Shelly of the Columbus Blue Jackets in the 2003 season. Stuart missed a major part of the season, and never seemed to physically or mentally recover. San Jose acquired tough-guy Scott Parker in order to prevent a similar kind of incident from happening again. Also, head coach Ron Wilson paired Stuart with hard-hitting defenseman Kyle McLaren, who reportedly restored confidence in Stuart by saying "I've got your back" in their first shift together after Stuart mishandled a clearing attempt. Relieved, Stuart played exceptionally well in the 2003-04 season. In 2006, the pairing was broken up so McLaren could mentor another defenseman. With Parker out due to injury, Stuart once again lost his confidence, and played very poorly, prompting his trade to Boston. However, the change of scenery has been great for Stuart, who has 31 points in 54 games since the trade. Stuart is in the first year of a two-year contract worth US$3.8 million that ends in 2007.
