Breed's hill

Encyclopedia : B : BR : BRE : Breed's hill

Breed's Hill is the actual site where the Battle of Bunker Hill took place during the American Revolution, located in the Charlestown section of Boston, Massachusetts.

The Americans caught word of a British plan to fortify Charlestown peninsula and decided to get to the peninsula first, fortify it, and present sufficient threat to cause the British to leave Boston. On 16 June, 1775, under the leadership of General Putnam and Colonel Prescott, the Americans stole out onto the Charlestown Peninsula with instructions to establish defensive positions on Bunker Hill.

For reasons that are unclear, they constructed a redoubt, a small and usually temporary defensive fortification, on nearby Breed's Hill. The next morning, the British were astonished to see the rebel fortifications upon the hill and set out to reclaim the peninsula. The resulting conflict became the Battle of Bunker Hill.
