Brighton & Hove is a unitary authority and city in East Sussex on the south coast of England. It was formed as a unitary authority on April 1, 1997 by the merger of the East Sussex districts of Brighton and Hove. The district was granted city status by Royal Charter in 2000. On October 15, 2004, Brighton & Hove was granted Fairtrade City status.

With the granting of city status still a relatively recent event, the once separate towns of Brighton, Hove, Portslade and the village of Rottingdean that now comprise the city are often referred to as being separate. All of these towns have themselves absorbed outlying villages during their history, which retain separate identities as districts within the city.

Council and Directorates

The current mayor of Brighton & Hove is Councillor David Smith. His wife, Mrs. Pat Smith, is Mayoress. The Chief Executive is Alan McCarthy. There are eight directorates in the council structure see [here for details].

Census

The resident population of Brighton & Hove at the [2001 census] was 247,817 persons, comprising 114,479 households: 48.4% male, 51.5% female. The first census of Brighton was in 1801.

Wording of the Letters Patent

The Letters Patent of 2000 that confers City status is worded thus:

:"ELIZABETH the SECOND BY THE GRACE OF GOD OF THE UNITED KINGDOM OF GREAT BRITAIN AND NORTHERN IRELAND & OF OUR REALMS & TERRITORIES QUEEN HEAD OF THE COMMON WEALTH DEFENDER OF THE FAITH.

:To all to whom these Presents shall come Greeting. Whereas We for divers good causes and considerations Us thereunto moving are graciously pleased to confer on the Towns of Brighton and Hove the status of a city Now Therefore Know Ye that We of Our especial grace and favour and mere motion do by these Presents ordain declare and direct that the TOWNS OF BRIGHTON AND HOVE shall henceforth have the status of a CITY and shall have all such rank liberties privileges and immunities as are incident to a City. In witness whereof We have caused Our Letters to be made Patent Witness Ourself at Westminster the thirty first day of January in the forty ninth year of our reign.
