British Honduras
Encyclopedia : B : BR : BRI : British Honduras
British Honduras was the former name of a British colony on the east coast of Central America just to the south-east of Mexico, now the independent nation of Belize. Settled by Europeans since the 17th century, it was a crown colony from 1862 through 1964, when it became self-governing. Belize became fully independent from the United Kingdom in 1981.
Today, the name lives on in the form of camouflage passport, which are passports issued in the name of non-existent countries and are manufactured by private businesses and sold by mail order or over the internet. They are marketed to security-conscious international travellers and tacitly as novelties.
