Brooklyn Eagle

Encyclopedia : B : BR : BRO : Brooklyn Eagle

The Brooklyn Eagle, also called The Brooklyn Daily Eagle, was a daily newspaper published in Brooklyn, New York from 1841 to 1955. It was the most popular afternoon paper in the United States at one point. Walt Whitman was its editor for two years. The Eagle played an important role in shaping Brooklyn's civic identity, even after the once-independent city became part of greater New York in 1898. The original Eagle ceased publication on March 16, 1955, following a prolonged strike by the Newspaper Guild.

Currently, there is a newspaper published weekdays also called The Brooklyn Daily Eagle, which has been published since 1996. It is a continuation of The Brooklyn Daily Bulletin, which has been published since 1955. It claims to be a successor paper to the original Brooklyn Eagle.

The Brooklyn Eagle was housed in the "Eagle Warehouse and Storage Co." warehouse at 28 Old Fulton St, Brooklyn, NY, which still stands today but saw conversion to residential condos in the 1970s. Directly across the street from the front entrance is the world famous Grimaldi's Pizzeria.
