Bruno Cheyrou

Encyclopedia : B : BR : BRU : Bruno Cheyrou

Bruno Cheyrou (born May 5, 1978 in Suresnes, France) is a professional football player for Rennes of the Ligue 1.

After success with Lille OSC, Gerard Houllier signed Cheyrou for Liverpool in the summer of 2002 for £4.5 million. On signature Houllier dubbed Cheyrou the "new Zidane". However, he never lived up to this claim - although a spell of 4 goals in 5 games over the Christmas period of the 2003-2004 season at one time suggested his Liverpool career may make a turn for the better.

At the beginning of the 2004-05 season new manager Rafa Benitez sent Cheyrou on loan to Marseille on a season long loan. He played 20 times for the club, scoring 1 goal. In the 2005-06 season he was once again sent on 1-season loan, this time to Bordeaux, with a view to a permanent move.

In June 2006 he joined Rennes on a permanent deal.

He has been capped 3 times with the France national team. He made his debut on August 21, 2002 in a 1-1 draw against Tunisia.
