Buffalo High School is located off of Country Road 35 in Buffalo, Minnesota. A constantly-growing area, along with three communities contributing students, has helped BHS grow into a large sized school of 1,700 students with a staff of approximately 350.
History
As like many other high schools in the area, Buffalo High School (BHS) has moved from building to building as enrollment figures have grown. Education in the Buffalo area started in what is now the local theater. As time went on, what is now Discovery Elementary School and the District #877 offices became the high school. Enrollment again took a rise and the 1970s, the school was moved to a new building off of Highway 25. The suburbinization of little town Minnesota soon took its toll on Buffalo, and in 1994 the referendum for a brand new school east of town was approved. It was not until 1997 that the new building opened. With the opening the last building become the Buffalo Community Middle School (BCMS), and the building before that became Discovery Elementary and the District offices.
The School Day
BHS offers many top of the line classes for students to choose from. Over 150 total classes are offered at any one time at BHS. The school day begins at 7:45 and ends at 2:20, using a block schedule of four class peroids that last 80 minutes. Passing time between classes is eight minutes, leaving ample time to get from across the school to the next class. AAA, the 20 minutes at the end of the day before dissmissal is a unique aspect of BHS. Students are allowed to go to any of their classes to work on [classwork], talk to friends or get help from the teacher. Generally considered study hour, the time is also used as "SSR" on Wednesday and Fridays. "Silent Sustained Reading" as it is formally called is a 20 minute silent reading time where students must read.
Lunch is broken down into four separate times during the third block: A, B, C, D.
School Activities
Academic: Academic Activities at BHS are plentiful, including: The one act play, Drumline, The school paper (The Hoofprint), Marching Band, Speech, Mock Trial, Knowledge Bowl, Science Club, along with many others. Mock Trial recently placed second in the state tournament, upsetting many of the larger schools that generally dominate such events. The Knowledge Bowl team recently won the Section 8AAA title, and have advanced to state.
Athletic Activities: The Bison have never been known for great sport teams, having only won a state tournament once in the past 15 years (Football 1993). The most recent success of any team came in 2006 with the Basketball team. After holding the first place ranking in the Mississippi 8, the Bison slipped in the last few weeks to second. The Monticello Magic beat the Bison in a close game 71-67 to win the conference crown.
