Code data
History
The airline was established in 2002 as a successor to the insolvent Balkan Bulgarian Airlines. By the order of the Minister of Transportation and Communications it was declared flag carrier in November 2002, thus being granted licence to operate some of the most profitable destinations. It started operations in December 2002 taking over responsibility for flights from the collapsed national carrier Balkan Bulgarian Airlines. Bulgaria Air was set to be privatized in 2005 and although the government wanted to sell the carrier to a major foreign investor, a union of locally-owned companies, led by Hemus Air, emerged as a likely buyer.
