Burco
Encyclopedia : B : BU : BUR : Burco
Burao (Somali: Burco, but pronounced almost like Burao) is the capital town in the region of Togdheer in Somaliland.
Like Hargeisa, it was heavily bombed in the 1980s to stop rebels from taking over the northern part of Somalia (currently Somaliland). Also like the other cities in the northern part of the country, Burao has been rebuilt largely without aid. The city has boomed economically with the money coming in and people from rural area moving in making squatters all over the city. The city has Burao University, one of the only colleges in the country. It also has an airport, hotels, hospitals, educational resources, rich of ground water and 24/7 electricity & water supply etc.
Burao's population has more than tripled since 1991, to around 350,000. It is part of the break-away Republic of Somaliland.
Burao is in centre of Somaliland and connects it with rest of former Itlain Somaliland in the south (known as Somalia). It is a very nice town with friendly folks which has a potential to become the commercial hub of the region.
