Burundian franc

The franc (ISO 4217 code is BIF) is the currency of Burundi. It is subdivided into 100 centimes, although coins have never been issued in centimes. Only under the Belgium congo franc were these low denomination's issued.
The franc became the currency of Burundi in 1916, when Belgium occupied the former German colony and replaced the German East African rupie with the Belgian Congo franc. Burundi used the currency of Belgian Congo until 1960, when it began issuing its own francs.
Coins
Issues come in denominations of:
- 1 franc of Aluminium/Bronze for 1965 issue and Aluminium from 1976 to present issue
- 5 francs made of Aluminium in 1976 and 1980.
- 10 francs of Cupronickel in 1968 and 1971.
Banknotes
It seems likely with the recent issue of a 10 and 20 franc notes in 2005, the small value of 10 and 20 francs as well as the economic situation that coins have fallen out of use.- 10 francs

Historical exchange rates
In March 2005 the exchange rate per U.S. dollar was 547.96. And on the 3 January 2006 was valued at 925 per US$1
