Călăraşi (IPA: [cə.lə.'raʃʲ]) is a county (judeţ) of Romania, in Muntenia, with the capital city at Călăraşi.

Geography

This county has a total area of 5,088 km².

The entire area is the South part of the Bărăgan Plain, crossed by small rivers with deep valleys. On the South and East side there is the valley of the Danube which, on the East side, splits in a number of branches, forming large islans, currently assanated. On the West side, the rivers Argeş and Dâmboviţa form a wide valley before flowing into the Danube.

Economy

The agriculture is the main occupation in the county, realising about 3% of the entire country's agricultural production.

The predominant industries in the county are:

  • Metalurgy - in Călăraşi there is a big metallurgical complex, similar to the one in Galaţi.
  • Food industry.
  • Textile industry.
  • Construction materials industry.
