C.A. Peñarol
Encyclopedia : C : CA : CAP : C.A. Peñarol
Club Atlético Peñarol is a traditional football team in Montevideo, Uruguay. Peñarol as such was officially founded on December 13th of 1913 by former members of the English "Central Uruguay Cricket Club" (CURCC). Unofficially, CURCC was being referred to as Peñarol since the early 1900's. CURCC itself was founded on March 12 1891. Peñarol's colors, yellow and black, derive from the colors used in railway signs and barriers. It is named after the town of Pinerolo, Italy.
Foundation Date Controversy
Peñarol claims to be the heir of the older club, CURCC, therefore laying claims to being the oldest club in Uruguay. This is contested by some, especially its rival Club Nacional de Football, who claim CURCC and Peñarol were two different clubs.
