Computer-Aided Acquisition and Life-Cycle Support (CALS) is a world-wide government/industry strategy that began in the 1980s, with a focus on migrating from hardcopy technical documentation to paperless delivery. The scope and direction of the CALS strategy broadened over time, and the meaning of the acronym changed with it. It began as Computer-Aided Logistics Support, then morphed to Computer-Aided Acquisition and Logistics Support. Finally, CALS grew to support the entire life-cycle of a product, hence the term Computer-Aided Acquisition and Life-Cycle Support.

The initial emphasis of CALS proponents was to further the use of emerging interchange standards for technical documentation, including SGML, CGM, and IGES.
