CBK (AM)

Encyclopedia : C : CB : CBK : CBK (AM)

CBK is a Canadian radio station, broadcasting the CBC Radio One network at 540 AM in Saskatchewan. The AM transmitter is located in Watrous, approximately halfway between Saskatoon and Regina, but the studios and community of license are in Regina.

The station was launched by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in 1939, serving both Regina and Saskatoon from the single transmitter site. Much of southern Saskatchewan, also including the cities of Yorkton, Swift Current, Moose Jaw and Prince Albert, receives the AM signal, which operates on a clear channel. However, due to urban AM reception issues, Regina itself is now served by an additional signal on 102.5 FM, which launched in 1999, and the CRTC has approved a similar plan for an additional signal in Saskatoon on 94.1 MHz on March 16, 2006 [link].

The station's local programs are The Morning Edition in the mornings from 06:00-08:30 CST, The Noon Edition from 12:00-14:00 CST and The Afternoon Edition in the afternoons from 16:00-18:00 CST.

There has recently been an effort by the town of Watrous to designate the transmitter site a historic site.

Rebroadcast transmitters

In addition to the Regina FM booster, the station also operates a rebroadcast transmitter on FM 98.5 in Meadow Lake.

CBKA (FM 105.9) in La Ronge has a local news bureau serving Northern Saskatchewan, but otherwise airs the same programming as CBK. The following rebroadcasters are legally considered repeaters of CBKA:
