Collège d'enseignement général et professionnel (French for "College of General and Vocational Education," initially abbreviated in French CEGEP, which became Cégep (IPA: [ˈseʒɛp]) for euphonic reasons; and often in English CEGEP (IPA: [ˈseʒɛp] or [ˈsiʤɛp])) is a type of educational institution in Quebec at the post-secondary level.
Students in the pre-university stream, finishing secondary school after Grade 11 (Secondary V, ages 16–17), attend Cégep for two years; in consequence, Quebec universities offer bachelor's degree programs lasting three years instead of the usual four outside Quebec to Cégep graduates. These students can choose from a variety of provincial government-established programs of study including required general education and program-specific courses and options. In contrast, in other Canadian provinces, students generally finish secondary school after Grade 12, with Grade 12 being the requirement for entry into university.
The R score, or cote de rendement au collégial (CRC), is a weighted cumulative average of course grades compared to the class average that also takes into consideration the strength of the students in the class. It is used to compare and rank students' Cégep academic performance for admission to Quebec university programs. Successful completion of a pre-university program at Cégep results in the granting of a provincial government-issued diploma, the DEC (Diplôme d'études collégiales).
Cégeps also offer technical (or professional) programs, which are different from pre-university programs. These three-year programs prepare students to enter the job market after graduation. However, most students who complete a technical program may also go to university.
Cégeps themselves vary from large, publicly funded institutions serving thousands of students to small, expensive private ones. Cégep often refers to the public version, while private institutions are simply called colleges. Also public English language Cégeps are also called colleges.
Although it is a French term, "Cégep" is also widely used by English-speaking Quebecers.
