CO-OP Network

Encyclopedia : C : CO : COO : CO-OP Network

} The CO-OP Network is an organization of more than 1,800 credit unions that operates a surcharge-free network of more than 25,000 ATMs. The network was founded in 1981 by a group of California credit unions, and has since spread across the United States and Canada, according to its [website]. Members of participating credit unions can make fee-free withdrawals at any CO-OP ATM, and can also make deposits at many of those ATMs. The network is considered to be an important factor in keeping credit unions competitive with larger regional and national banks that have networks of hundreds, or even thousands of ATMs their customers can use without paying extra fees.

The network also owns a subsidiary, Service Centers Corporation, which provides shared branching services for more than 250 credit unions sharing more than 2,056 branches. The corporation was founded in 1975 by five Detroit-area credit unions to minimize costs associated with having their own branches. They opened the first shared Credit Union Family Service Center in Riverview, Michigan. As of 2006, there are 23 such centers operated by SCC in Michigan, Maryland and Virginia.
