Encyclopedia : C : CA : CAD : Cadena SER
Cadena SER (Sociedad Española de Radiodifusión - Spanish Society of Radio) is the principal radio station in Spain covering news, sports, talk shows and culture. Cadena SER belongs to Grupo Prisa, that has a considerable power in the Spanish media, for example musical radio stations like (M80 Radio, Los 40 Principales), newspapers (El País) and digital tv (Digital+). Cadena SER is the most listened radio station in Spain. Cadena SER can be tuned in the whole Spanish territory. Despite the fact that Cadena SER has local and regional stations that cover the local and regional information for about two hours a day, the main studios are located at the Gran Vía avenue in Madrid.
History
Cadena SER was created in 1926 when Radio Madrid and Radio Barcelona fusionated. Since that, Cadena SER has covered some of the most events in the Spanish and international history (Flight of the Plus Ultra across the Atlantic ocean, murder of John Fitzgerald Kennedy,...) Cadena SER has also played a very important role in the Spanish transition to democracy and the terrorist attacks of the 11-M.
Politics
Cadena SER (alongside with the other Grupo Prisa media) is considered to be close to PSOE, the spanish main left-winged political party. Because of this fact, there has been lots of disputes with the other main radio station in Spain called cadena COPE (belonging to the Spanish catholic episcopal power and close to PP, the main right-winged political party in Spain).
Sports
Cadena SER is also leader in covering sports. Cadena SER covers completely all La Liga matches, the UEFA Champions League games where a Spanish team is playing and the matches of Spain. The main sport programs are Carrusel Deportivo and El Larguero.
