California (song)
Encyclopedia : C : CA : CAL : California (song)
"California" is a song by Phantom Planet, who are based in Southern California. Both the song and the band received major attention when it became the title song on the hit show on FOX, The O.C.. It was also previously in the soundtrack to the film Orange County. The song is about driving on U.S. Route 101, travelling to see a concert.
The estates of Al Jolson and his songwriting team are co-credited for "California;" presumably because the title and chorus come dangerously close to his own "California, Here I Come." Some websites even (inaccurately) refer to the Phantom Planet song as a "cover" of the Jolson tune.
The song was redone in 2005 by Phantom Planet and re-released as "California 2005," a much mellower version of the song than the original. "California 2005" had its debut on one of the early episodes of season three of The O.C., when Marissa Cooper and her bad-boy yet good-hearted boyfriend Ryan Atwood are expelled from The Harbor School by the Dean. Ryan punched the Dean in the face for laying a hand on Marissa during the annual Harbor kick-off carnival. "California 2005" can be found as track 11 on . "California" can be found as track 1 on Phantom Planet's second album, The Guest.
"California" is also the title of several other songs, including ones by Joni Mitchell, Sugarcult and Stroke 9.
