State Route 38 is a mostly rural and scenic road that begins at State Route 18 at the westernmost point of Big Bear Lake. Boarding the north shore of the lake, it becomes North Shore Drive as it passes Fawnskin then Minnelusa. After it passes Big Bear City Airport, it turns south onto Green Way Drive while Route 18 continues east. Route 38 enters Big Bear City, and merges with East Big Bear Boulevard. When Shay Road connects from the north, CA-38 turns south, becoming Greenspot Boulevard, then briefly Oak Drive. It leaves Big Bear City, and ascends south towards Onyx Summit at 8,443 ft. near 9,114 ft. Onyx Peak, being one of the highest roads in Southern California. After the summit, the highway starts its descent of the southern face of the San Bernardino Mountains east of Angelus Oaks. Route 38 then turns due west along Mountain Home Village before leaving the San Bernardino National Forest. Route 38 merges with Mill Creek Road before entering Mentone, then it becomes Mentone Boulevard. As one enters Redlands from Mentone, CA-38 becomes Lugonia Avenue before turning south on Orange Street and terminating at Interstate 10 in Redlands east of the State Route 210 interchange.
