Camden is a city in Kershaw County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 6,682 at the 2000 census and center of an urban cluster with a total population of 17,359. It is the county seat of Kershaw County[Geographic references#6GR6].

Geography

Camden is located at [34°15′33″N, 80°36′33″W] (34.259146, -80.609161)[Geographic references#1GR1].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 25.3 km² (9.8 mi²). 25.0 km² (9.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it (1.23%) is water.

Demographics

As of the census[Geographic references#2GR2] of 2000, there were 6,682 people, 2,874 households, and 1,813 families residing in the city. The population density was 267.4/km² (692.2/mi²). There were 3,283 housing units at an average density of 131.4/km² (340.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 60.72% White, 37.19% African American, 0.10% Native American, 0.45% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 0.63% from other races, and 0.81% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.32% of the population.

There were 2,874 households out of which 24.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.6% were married couples living together, 16.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.9% were non-families. 34.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 18.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.25 and the average family size was 2.88.

In the city the population was spread out with 21.8% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 24.0% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 23.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 82.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 77.6 males.

The Kershaw House, Georgian mansion first built, 1775-1780, by Joseph Kershaw, merchant and leading citizen of Camden became the headquarters for the occupying British army, 1980-1781. It burned in 1865, and was the object of an archaeological dig in 1968. Then it was rebuilt from 1974-1977.

The median income for a household in the city was $36,209, and the median income for a family was $53,056. Males had a median income of $37,342 versus $26,693 for females. The per capita income for the city was $23,037. About 13.1% of families and 16.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 25.3% of those under age 18 and 13.7% of those age 65 or over.

Camden is the center of an urban cluster with a total population of 17,359 (2000 census).

The Carolina Cup

The Carolina Cup is an annual event held on the first Saturday of April. The races have become a South Carolina tradition, and normally draw over 70,000 people. The "Cup" has become a premier social event, and is especially popular with South Carolina college students.

The Cup is held at the Springdale Race Course.
